About Us

Trauma informed therapy and EMDR intensives in Newton, MA designed to help

Meet Marisa

You’re not coming to therapy because you lack insight. You’re coming because, despite understanding your patterns, something still isn’t shifting. I’m Marisa Tuncali, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) specializing in trauma-focused therapy for individuals navigating sexual trauma, medical trauma, and complex PTSD, as well as grief, loss, and anxiety that can follow overwhelming experiences.

Clients often describe me as calm, grounded, and compassionate. I strive to create a space where you don’t have to minimize your experience or hold it all together. Together, we will work to gently and effectively process what you’ve been carrying at a pace that feels manageable and supportive. My approach integrates EMDR, Progressive Counting, the Flash Technique, and parts-based, attachment-focused work to support nervous system regulation and deeper healing not just insight, but meaningful, lasting change.

As a biracial therapist, I bring a culturally attuned lens and welcome conversations around identity, including culture, race, and gender. My goal is to create a space where all parts of you feel seen, respected, and understood. Ultimately, my work is focused on helping you feel more like yourself more connected, more at ease, and more able to engage fully in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer online and in-person therapy?

Yes. I provide both in-person therapy in Newton and secure online telehealth sessions for clients throughout Massachusetts, including Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Wellesley, and the MetroWest area. Virtual sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant platform designed to protect your privacy and confidentiality

Do you offer evening or weekend therapy appointments?

Yes. Evening and limited weekend appointments are available for adults across Massachusetts both in-person and virtually.

What issues do you specialize in?

I specialize in working with adults experiencing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, chronic stress, and life transitions. My approach is informed by EMDR and trauma-focused therapy and supports clients navigating childhood trauma, sexual assault, abuse, overwhelming life experiences, relationship challenges, and nervous system dysregulation. As a multicultural clinician, I value creating a supportive, collaborative, and culturally responsive space for clients from diverse backgrounds.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. I currently accept Aetna and Point32Health insurance plans, and I also offer private pay options. One exception is therapy intensives, which are offered as private pay services due to insurance limitations on extended-session formats. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about coverage, benefits, session fees, or out-of-network reimbursement options.

What is EMDR therapy and is it right for me?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy approach that helps the brain process and heal from distressing experiences that may feel “stuck.” EMDR therapy is commonly used to support individuals experiencing PTSD, trauma, anxiety, childhood trauma, abuse, panic, and overwhelming life stress.
EMDR may be helpful if you feel emotionally triggered, anxious, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or impacted by painful past experiences that continue to affect your present life and relationships. My approach to EMDR-informed therapy is collaborative, thoughtfully paced, and tailored to each client’s individual needs and goals.

What are therapy intensives and how do they work?

Therapy intensives are extended therapy sessions designed to provide more focused and immersive support than traditional weekly therapy. Intensives can be especially helpful for individuals working through trauma, PTSD, anxiety, childhood trauma, sexual assault, abuse, or major life transitions who are looking for deeper therapeutic work in a shorter period of time.
EMDR-informed therapy intensives may allow clients to process experiences more continuously and with greater momentum than standard 45–60 minute sessions. Intensive formats may include 2-hour sessions, half-day intensives, or full-day intensive sessions depending on each client’s needs and goals.
Intensives may be offered virtually throughout Massachusetts or in person in Newton. Because insurance typically does not cover extended-session formats, intensives are offered as private pay services.

What can I expect during the first therapy session?

The first therapy session is a chance for us to get to know each other and talk about what’s bringing you to therapy. We’ll discuss your current concerns, important life experiences, relationships, stressors, and what you hope to gain from therapy.
My approach is warm, supportive, and trauma-informed, with an emphasis on creating a space where you feel comfortable, heard, and respected. The first session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, learn more about my approach to therapy and EMDR, and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
